Hate spending money on boring things like ‘electricity?’ Us too!  Here are some practical tips to help you save money on electricity this winter, and use your money on ‘fun’ instead.

TIP #1 – BUY DRAPES

This may be the excuse you’ve been looking for to go shopping for cute drapes! In the dark winter evenings, close your cute window coverings to keep the heat IN. Choose a thick, light blocking drape that is solid, not sheer.  In the daytime, throw open the window coverings and let the hot, free sunshine heat your house!

TIP #2 – SEAL OUT COLD AIR

Drafty doors and windows are the greatest source of cold air coming into your home. So, grab a caulking gun, crank the music, and get busy sealing things up. Proper air sealing can result in cutting your energy use by as much as 20 – 40%.

TIP #3 –  STICK TO LARGE WASH LOADS

Only do laundry when you have a full load. Don’t wash just a few things, here and there, on a constant basis. Same goes for the dishwasher. Wait until it’s nice and full of dirty dishes before running it. And whenever possible, hang clothes to dry instead of running the dryer.

TIP #4 –  USE LESS HOT WATER

Did you know that hot water use can account for 20% of an average 3-4 person family’s annual energy bill? Showering less frequently, or reducing shower length, means using less hot water.  Switching to a water-efficient showerhead will also help you use about 50% less water, and using a timer when you shower, (especially for your teenagers!) will help you keep it under 10 minutes.

Sadly, this tip also includes that you should take less baths. Baths require a lot more hot water to fill up than a shower requires to run.

Lastly, use cold water instead of warm or hot, in your washing machine, as much as possible.

TIP #5 –  USE ENERGY STAR APPLIANCES

If you need to replace old appliances and windows, replace them with Energy Star qualified ones. They are the best for using the least amount of power.

TIP #6 –  HIRE AN INSULATION COMPANY

Damp-proofing and insulating your basement is the #1 way to reduce 25% of the heat loss in your home. Hiring an insulation company like Huff ‘N Puff has high upfront cost, but the best long-term return.

Paying for an expert pays off, and Ryan here at Huff ‘N Puff can ensure you get the minimum R rated insulation to help you stay warm.  If you plan on staying in your home long term, there’s no better way to save $ and enjoy the benefits of being warm all winter long.

TIP #7 –  LET GRANTS PAY FOR THESE UPGRADES!

Take advantage of any rebates, credits or grants available for creating an energy efficient home. The New Brunswick Energy Savings Program will  partially pay for things like lightbulbs, power bars, new windows, appliances, and even your insulation!
